Composite Machining

Composite materials are abrasive and have high hardness, resulting in rapid wear of conventional carbide cutting tools during machining. Diamond-coated cutting tools are ideal for composite and graphite machining because of their extended durability and superhardness. Other main issues that occur in composite machining are material delamination and splintering. Almost every type of composite material requires unique tool design and machining methods. Obtaining a suitable tooling solution is critical to successful composite machining.

Graphite Machining

CVD diamond-coated tools are the perfect choice for graphite processing, and their life can reach 10-50 times that of conventional carbide tools. At the same time, due to the low friction coefficient, the processing speed of CVD diamond-coated tools is 2-3 times higher than that of hard alloy, and the thin wall and deep rib parts of graphite electrodes can be accurately machined without coolant. High-speed milling for graphite processing requires the minimization of tool vibration. The tool is designed with small back Angle and unequal spiral edge, which can eliminate cutting resonance and improve machining quality.

The quality of growing pure diamond films on solid carbide tools depends on the diamond coating’s uniformity, density, smoothness, and adhesion. Only a very few grades of tungsten carbide materials meet the requirements of CVD diamond coating. Choosing the wrong carbide material can result in coating delamination, unevenness, roughness, or even failure to grow diamonds.
