Composite Machining

Composite materials are abrasive and have high hardness, resulting in rapid wear of conventional carbide cutting tools during machining. Diamond-coated cutting tools are ideal for composite and graphite machining because of their extended durability and superhardness. Other main issues that occur in composite machining are material delamination and splintering. Almost every type of composite material requires unique tool design and machining methods. Obtaining a suitable tooling solution is critical to successful composite machining.

Graphite Machining

CVD diamond-coated tools are the perfect choice for graphite machining, and their life can reach 10-50 times that of conventional carbide tools. At the same time, due to the low friction coefficient, the machining speed of CVD diamond-coated tools is 2-3 times higher than that of carbide tools, and the thin wall and deep rib parts of graphite electrodes can be accurately machined without coolant. High-speed milling of graphite requires the minimization of tool vibration. The tool is designed with small relief angle and unequal spiral flute, which can eliminate cutting resonance and improve machining quality.

Carbide Rods and Preforms for CVD-coating

The quality of growing pure diamond films on solid carbide tools depends on the diamond coating’s uniformity, density, smoothness, and adhesion. Only a very few grades of tungsten carbide materials meet the requirements of CVD diamond coating. Choosing the wrong carbide material can result in coating delamination, unevenness, roughness, or even failure to grow diamonds. After over a decade of validation and testing, Toolind has identified several high-quality carbide materials specifically for CVD diamond coating, with sufficient inventory.

CVD Diamond Coating Service

Because of its high hardness and wear resistance, the diamond tool is an ideal choice for processing high-hardness and abrasive materials. With decades’ experience and know-how obtained, from expensive natural diamond slicing, to artificial polycrystalline diamond, from PCD to today’s CVD(chemical vapor deposition) diamond coating, technology become more sophisticated and affordable.
Before sending the tools for coating, it is necessary to confirm the tungsten carbide grade, tool type, material to be processed, and other information. If the carbide grade of the tools is not on our known list, we recommend doing test before mass production.

Superhard cutting tools-PCD、CBN

PCD tools and CBN tools are both types of superhard cutting tools. PCD tools are suitable for machining composite materials, graphite, and non-ferrous metals. CBN tools are ideal for machining hardened steel and other ferrous materials, known as ‘hard cutting.’
